Day Five: ALPHA
Level 1: Meditating the Vishuddha (Throat) Chakra
Sit in a comfortable meditative posture. Keep your spine erect and body relaxed. With the body
completely still, practice a few moments of natural mind meditation. Once the mind is sufficiently
clear, direct your attention to your throat or Vishuddha chakra. Make it as clear and pristine as
possible, glistening and sparkling with vibrant energy. When it is pure and translucent, radiating
from your throat, allow it to dissolve and transform itself into a blue sixteen-petalled lotus.
Concentrate on this area inside of your throat chakra. This center contains the will to communicate
and to extend oneself to others in patterns of informative thought and behavior.
The Vishuddha chakra is the channel of communication bringing the fourth dimension through
to the third dimension. This deals both with the mental and emotional bodies and is the center
for artistic expression and communicating intelligence derived from the higher mental spheres
(5th and 6th).
The Vishuddha chakra is known by some yogic traditions as the chakra of spiritual rebirth, and in
Kundalini yoga as the “fountain of youth”, the place where spontaneous physical rejuvenation begins.
To activate the Vishuddha chakra you may recite prayers, sing devotional songs or practice mantra.
Chant “Ahhh” seven times to open the throat chakra.
This chakra is governed by the feminine principle or Shakti Goddess Shakini (Knowledge). The
Vishuddha is also the center of purification and discrimination and the locus of vijnana, or divine
analytical wisdom. By focusing our attention on this chakra, we can discriminate between messages
from the higher mind from messages of ego.
This Vishuddha chakra is related with Nada Yoga, or the branch of kundalini yoga concerned with
sound vibration (Vishuddha and Muladhara are considered to be the two basic centers of vibration).
The Muladhara chakra corresponds to the cosmic vibratory root, while the Vishuddha chakra is
the receiver of the higher harmonics of the music of the spheres. When this chakra reaches its
highest state, sounds emitted take on magical qualities that change the space of the listener through

vibration. This chakra can also be utilized as a receiving station to tune into the thoughts and
feelings of people both far and near.
This is the supermental reception center of thought-waves and transmissions which discriminates
then directs messages to the appropriate chakra. As this chakra awakens, we can begin to direct the
energies of the body from the lower to the higher chakras, reconnecting our expression as higher
resonant channels of the cosmos.
Note: The nerve channel in the throat is also associated with kurma nadi, the tortoise nadi. When
this nadi is awakened the practitioner is able to completely overcome the desire and necessity for
food and drink. (This has been demonstrated by many yogis, particularly in India. Examples of such
yogis/yoginis can be found in Autobiography of a Yogi, by Sri Paramahansa Yogananda).
Vishuddha affirmation: May the vision of the star elders of the great councils of light and wisdom speak
through me so that all may ascend to sublime grace!
Level 2: Activating Radial Plasma: Alpha
Breathe deeply through your nostrils and allow your awareness to flow up your nose and down into
your throat chakra. Bring your awareness to the inner Alpha plasma at the center of the chakra.
Visualize the yellow symbol radiating luminous streams of white light.
Feel the electrical vibration of the Alpha plasma gathered in the throat center. This center activates
the double-extended electrical charge, which is in telepathic resonance with the South Pole. Repeat
the following while focusing on your throat chakra: “My country is the unborn ultimate sphere,
I release the double-extended electron at the South Pole.” Unborn refers to the unconditional
indestructible state that pervades the entire universe from beginningless beginning to endless end.
Feel your consciousness align with Universal consciousness as your vibration raises to the frequency
of the new Earth. All knots and obscurations dissolve from your mental stream as you merge into the
great ocean of superconscious universal mind.

Cover your left nostril with your left thumb and breathe deeply three times in and out through your
right nostril. Flash onto the Alpha plasma and feel the light streaming in from the Universal Mind
purifying your throat chakra, and cleansing all of your communication channels. Now cover your
right nostril with your right thumb and repeat the three breaths, focusing all of your attention on the
throat chakra. Your throat chakra emanates sound enlivening and resonating healing vibrations to
all of the other chakras. You are the creator of the new stories, the teller of the new tales.
Alpha plasma charge is the first stage of the three-part telepathic quantum. At the
center of Alpha feel the integrated charges of the sensory quanta: Dali, Seli, and
Gamma, transmuted by Kali into the Alpha telepathic charge. Then by extending your
mind telepathically to the south of the Planet, release the double-extended electron
at the South Pole.
Level 3: Engaging the Fifth Mental Sphere (Superconscious)
Hyperelectronic superconscious activates fifth mental sphere.
Visualize the fifth mental sphere (superconscious) situated in the brain above the left ear in the left
cerebral hemisphere. This is the seat of the fifth-dimensional higher self and functions with the
fourth-dimensional “Other”. This mental sphere governs and activates the right lateral hemispheres
midway between right ear and right temple where it sends paranormal impulses to the first mental
sphere: preconscious.
Superconsciousness lies behind the veil of waking consciousness. It is sometimes referred to as cosmic
consciousness or Christ consciousness; the self-existing consciousness bliss that transcends creation.
The quality of our thoughts and attention is key to harnessing these superconscious powers.
Our thoughts are electronic lines of force that release into the atmosphere and create specific effects
according to the strength of the thought. To embody a superconscious state of mind requires persistent
and attentive concentration and devotion to meditation practice.
This sphere corresponds to the fifth time dimension, the radial time of the superconscious fifth-
dimensional Higher Self. It is characterized by an electrical hyper-clarity that is definitely not “of this
world.” This sphere is increasingly activated with the advent of the noosphere, and is characterized
by total holistic perception. Incorporating the continuing conscious of the fourth mental sphere, the
superconscious expands into the mentation waves of the fifth-dimensional higher self. A “mentation”

wave is a configuration of telepathic potentialities, independent of language, and based on whole
orders of supermental precepts intrinsic to non-egoic knowing. To cultivate a superconscious mind,
meditate the whole Earth as a single organism held together by a universal thought-field.
Whole Earth Meditation
Visualize yourself right where you are. Notice the space that you are in, whether it be inside or outside. Now lift
out of the environment you find yourself in and look down on it from above. Lift out further and see the entire
street or area that you are in. Now expand out and lift higher and higher into space. From space, view the Earth
as a single luminous blue mandala. See the Earth from all angles. See it as a planetary orb, a wheel spinning in
space with an essential value, its dharma or truth. The dharma or capacity of Earth is its capacity to sustain life.
Visualize the whole of life on Earth, from the animals, to the plants, to the humans down onto the insects
and plankton. See it all as one whole system. The whole of the life on the Earth is the biosphere, or the sphere
of life that covers the surface of the Earth like a film or vibrant mantle that is ever in motion. Really visualize how
all of the different life forms and processes are one unity on this shining blue orb.
Now let your mind penetrate beneath the surface of the Earth. Feel the spherical layers of sediment and
crystalline rock. Go to the core and find the massive iron crystal octahedron. Feel this crystal core as a dynamic
radio receiver elongated in the direction of each of its magnetic poles. Place yourself in meditation at the very
center of that crystal radio receiver. Who is the Earth receiving? What is the Earth broadcasting? Where is the
Earth receiving? What messages is Earth giving you right now?
Note: Application of advanced pure meditation techniques are necessary to unify with universal cosmic space.
Telepathic supernormative thoughtforms are always coming from the fifth mental sphere, the superconscious.
Chapter 5 • Synchrogalactic Yoga II: the Practices
Level 4: Opening the Fifth Heptad Gate (414)
Visualize the blue sixteen-petaled lotus Vishuddha chakra with the yellow
Alpha plasma superimposed over it at your throat. Hold this visualization and
feel the two intermingle as you chant the sacred letter HRAUM as long as your
breath can sustain it.
Locate Heptad Gate 414 and the Hyperelectron symbol on the 441 holomind perceiver. Its matrix
location is V11:H14, eighth circuit, 9th time dimension, inner core time. Now locate it in your body
at front, center top of your skull (see graphic at the end of this chapter).
Visualize the Hyperelectron with the spiraling red Kuali force field above the yellow Alpha in your
throat chakra. Take the Hyperelectron into the fifth mental sphere in the fifth time dimension (red
Kuali electrothermic force field H11:V1-7, right-handed time) where it activates the superconscious
as hyperelectronic superconscious informing mental spheres one and two.
From the fifth mental sphere, mentally direct the black Hyperelectron to the throat chakra and
impress it above the Alpha seal. Hold this with four alternate nostril breaths (four times in and out
through each nostril), followed by one breath through both nostrils.
Descend down the central column (spine), secreting the Hyperelectron (red kuali force field) into all
144,000 etheric fibers of the astral body. Practice the breath of fire, rapid shallow breathing through
the nose, transmuting any blockages or obscurations into streams of crystal clear hyperelectronic
superconscious spreading through your entire nervous system.
The black Hyperelectron with spectral, electric red Kuali force field vibrates subtle activating
electronic force into all etheric fibers. Descend back down central channel and leave Alpha at the
throat chakra. Return your consciousness to the fifth mental sphere, then close and seal the Heptad
Gate at the front top-center of your skull. Relax and breathe slowly and deeply at least 13 times.

to the Enlightened One, the Bringer of the Higher Truth, the Renewer of Life, Holder of the
Timespace Wisdom; G/K Pluto, Bode Number 388. Study all of the connections (see graphic at the
end of this chapter).

EVEN IF ONE WERE TO PREPARE A FEAST OF A HUNDRED FLAVORS, IF THE SINGLE FLAVOR OF SALT WERE MISSING, IT WOULD BE NO FEAST FOR A GREAT KING. WITHOUT SALT, EVEN THE DELICACIES OF LAND AND SEA ARE TASTELESS.

THE OCEAN HAS EIGHT MYSTERIOUS QUALITIES. FIRST, IT GRADUALLY BECOMES DEEPER. SECOND, BEING DEEP, ITS BOOM IWS HARD TO FATHOM. THIRD, ITS SALTY TASTE IS THE SAME EVERYWHERE. FORUTH, ITS EBB AND FLOW FOLLOWS CERTAIN RULES. FIFTH, IT CONTAINS VARIOUS TREASURE STOREHOUSES. SIXTH, CREATURES OF GREAT SIZE EXIST AND DWELL IN IT. SEVENTH, IT REFUSES TO HOUSE CORPSES. [THE NIRVANA SUTRA] COMPARES THE WATER OF ALL THE RIVERS FLOWING INTO THE SEA AND BECOMING SALTY TO THE PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT CAPACITIES INSTRUCTED THROUGH THE VARIOUS PROVISIONAL TEACHINGS WHO ATTAIN THE BUDDHA WAY WHEN THEY TAKE FAITH IN THE LOTUS SUTRA. IT COMPARES “ITS EBB AND FLOW FOLLOWS CERTAIN RULES” TO UPHOLDERS OF THE MYSTIC LAW WHO EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE TO LOSE THEIR LIVES WOULD ATTAIN THE STAGE OF NON-REGRESSION. IT COMPARES “IT CONTAINS VARIOUS TREASURE STOREHOUSES” TO THE COUNTLESS PRACTICES AND GOOD DEEDS OF ALL BUDDHAS AND BODHISATTVAS, AND THE BLESSINGS OF THE VARIOUS PARAMITAS BEING CONTAINED IN THE MYSTIC LAW. THE REASON FOR “CREATURES OF GREAT SIZE EXIST AND DWELL IN IT” IS THAT, BECAUSE THE BUDDHAS AND BODHISATTVAS POSSES GREAT WISDOM, THEY ARE CALLED “CREATURES OF GREAT SIZE,” AND THAT THEIR GREAT BODIES, GREAT ASPIRING MINDS, GREAT DISTINGUISHING FEATURES, GREAT EVIL-CONQUERING FORCE, GREAT PREACHING, GREAT AUTHORITY, GREAT TRANSCENDENTAL POWERS, GREAT COMPASSION, AND GREAT PITY ALL ARISE NATURALLY FROM THE LOTUS SUTRA. THE REASON FOR “WITHOUT EITHER INCREASING OR DECREASING” IS THAT THE HEART OF THE LOTUS SUTRA IS THE UNIVERSALITY OF THE BUDDHA NATURE OF ALL LIVING BEINGS. THE BRINE IN A TUB OR JAR OF PICKLED VINES EBBS AND FLOWS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE BRINE OF THE SEA. ONE WHO UPHOLDS THE LOTUS SUTRA AND IS SUBJECTED TO IMPRISONMENT IS LIKE THE SALT IN A TUB OR JAR, WHILE THE THUS COME ONE SHAKYAMUNI WHO FREED HIMSELF FROM THE BURNING HOUSE IS LIKE THE SALT OF THE SEA. TO CONDEMN ONE WHO UPHOLDS THE LOTUS IS TO CONDEMN THE THUS COME ONE SHAKYAMUNI. HOW ASTONISHED BRAHMA, SHAKRA, AND THE FOUR HEAVENLY KINDS MUST BE! IF NOT NOW, WHEN WILL THE TEN DEMON DAUGHTERS’ VOW TO SPLIT THE HEAD OF ONE WHO PERSECUTES A FOLLOWER OF THE LOTUS INTO SEVEN PIECES BE CARRIED OUT?

AJATASHATRU, WHO HAD IMPRISONED KING BIMBISARA, SUDDENLY BROKE OUT IN VIRULENT SORES IN HIS PRESENT EXISTENCE. HOW CAN ONE WHO HAS IMPRISONED AN UPHOLDER OF THE LOTUS NOT SUFFER FROM VIRULENT SORES IN THIS EXISTENCE?

LOTUS SUTRA CHAPTER 5

Point Five, the words “[the light . . .] reaching downward as far as the Avīchi hell”

The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings says: This passage shows that beings in all of the Ten Worlds can attain Buddhahood. The passage makes clear that Devadatta has attained Buddhahood. In the chapter following the “Treasure Tower” chapter, the matter of Devadatta’s attaining Buddhahood is further explained in the so-called two admonitions.7 But at the time represented by the present passage in chapter one, Devadatta has already attained Buddhahood.
The word “reaching” refers to the ray of light emitted by the Buddha from the tuft of white hair between his eyebrows. The ray of light from the white hair is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. The passage immediately following, that says that the ray of light reached “upward to the Akanishtha heaven,” represents the truth of non-substantiality. That this says it reached “downward as far as the Avīchi hell” represents the truth of temporary existence. And the light from the tuft of white hair represents the Middle Way. From p.17this it is clear that beings in the Ten Worlds can all attain Buddhahood at the same time. In the “Devadatta” chapter we are told that Devadatta will be adorned with the title Heavenly King Buddha.
If we consider the time of the attainment of Buddhahood from the two aspects of “environment” and “life,” then we see that in the passage on “reaching downward as far as the Avīchi hell,” the attainment of Buddhahood is being explained in terms of the “environment” [that is, hell]. And in the “Devadatta” chapter, when we are told that Devadatta will be called Heavenly King Thus Come One, the attainment of Buddhahood is being explained in terms of the “life” of the individual. But in the case of both “environment” and “life,” the attainment of Buddhahood is accomplished through the Wonderful Law.
Now when Nichiren and his followers perform ceremonies for the deceased, reciting the Lotus Sutra and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the ray of light from the daimoku reaches all the way to the hell of incessant suffering and makes it possible for them to attain Buddhahood then and there. This is the origin of the prayers for transference of merit for the deceased.
Even if persons who had no faith in the Lotus Sutra have fallen into the hell of incessant suffering, as practitioners of the Lotus Sutra their filial offspring may offer them the ray of light from the daimoku. How could this principle [of the daimoku enabling one to attain Buddhahood] be any different than it is in the case of persons who have faith in the sutra?
Therefore Nichiren is led to conclude that this passage on the ray of light “reaching downward as far as the Avīchi hell” is intended to depict the way in which the Buddha, emitting a ray of light, makes it possible for Devadatta to attain Buddhahood.

AT THAT TIME THE WORLD-HONORED ONE SAID TO MAHAKASHYAPA THE OTHER MAJOR DISCIPLES: “EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, KASHYAPA. YOU HAVE GIVEN AN EXCELLENT DESCRIPTION OF THE TRUE BLESSINGS OF THE THUS COME ONE. IT IS JUST AS YOU HAVE SAID. THE THUS COME ONE INDEED HAS IMMEASURABLE, BOUNDLESS, ASAMKHYAS OF BLESSINGS, AND THOUGH YOU AND THE OTHERS WERE TO SPEND IMMEASURABLE MILLIONS OF KALPAS IN THE EFFORT, YOU COULD NEVER FINISH DESCRIBING THEM.

“KASHYAPA, YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THIS. THE THUS COME ONE IS KING OF THE DOCTRINES. IN WHAT HE PREACHES, THERE IS NOTHING THAT IS VAIN. WITH REGARD TO ALL THE VARIOUS DOCTRINES, HE EMPLOYS WISDOM AND EXPEDIENT MEANS IN EXPOUNDING THEM. THEREFORE, THE DOCTRINES THAT HE EXPOUNDS ALL EXTEND TO THE POINT WHERE THERE IS COMPREHENSIVE WISDOM. THE THUS COME ONE OBSERVES AND UNDERSTAND THE END TO WHICH ALL DOCTRINES THEND. AND HE ALSO UNDERSTANDS THE WORKINGS OF THE DEEPEST MINDS OF ALL LIVING BEINGS, PENETRATING THEM COMPLETELY AND WITHOUT HINDRANCE. AND WILL REGARD TO THE DOCTRINES HE IS THOROUGHLY ENLIGHTENED, AND HE REVEALS TO LIVING BEINGS THE TOTALITY OF WISDOM.

“KASHYAPA, IT IS LIKE THE PLANTS AND TREES, THICKETS AND GROVES, AND THE MEDICINAL HERBS, WIDELY RANGING IN VARIETY, EACH WITH ITS OWN NAME AND HUE, THAT CROW IN THE HILLS AND STREAMS, THE VALLEYS AND DIFFERENT SOILS OF THE MAJOR WORLD SYSTEM AND IN ONE MOMENT SATURATING IT ALL. THE MOISTURE PENETRATES TO ALL THE PLANTS AND TRESS, THICKETS AND GROVES, AND MEDICINAL HERBS EQUALLY, TO THEIR LITTLE ROOTS, LITTLE STEMS, LITTLE LIMBS, LITTLE LEAVES, THEIR MIDDLE-SIZED ROOTS, MIDDLE-SIZED STEMS, MIDDLE-SIZED LIMBS, MIDDLE-SIZED LEAVES, TO THEIR BIG ROOTS, BIG STEMS, AND BIG LEAVES. EACH OF THE TREES BIG AND SMALL DEPENDING UPON WHETHER IT IS SUPERIOR, MIDDLING, OR INFERIOR IN NATURE, RECEIVES ITS ALLOTMENT. THE RAIN FALLING FROM ONE BLANKET OF CLOUD ACCORDS WITH EACH PARTICULAR SPECIES AND NATURE, CAUSING IT TO SPROUT AND MATURE, TO BLOSSOM AND BEAR FRUIT. THOUGH ALL THESE PLANS AND TRESS GROW IN THE SAME EARTH AND ARE MOISTENED BY THE SAME RAIN, EACH HAS ITS DIFFERENCES AND PARTICULARS. ”

“KASHYAPA, YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT THE THUS COME ONE IS LIKE THIS. HE APPEARS IN THE WORLD LIKE A GREAT CLOUD RISING UP. WITH A LOUD VOICE HE PENETRATES TO ALL THE HEAVENLY AND HUMAN BEINGS AND THE ASURAS OF THE ENTIRE WORLD, LIKE A GREAT CLOUD SPREADING OVER THE LANDS OF THE MAJOR WORLD SYSTEM. AND IN THE MIDST OF THE GREAT ASSEMBLY, HE ADDRESSES THESE WORDS, SAYING: “I AM THE THUS COME ONE, WORTHY OF OFFERINGS, OF RIGHT AND UNIVERSAL KNOWLEDGE, PERFECT CLARITY AND CONDUCT, WELL GONE, UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD, UNEXCELLED WORTHY, TRAINER OF PEOPLE, TEACHER OF HEAVENLY AND HUMAN BEINTG, BUDDHA, WORLD-HONORED ONE. THOSE WHO HAVE NOT YET CROSSED OVER I WILL CAUSE TO CROSS OVER, THOSE WHO HAVE NOT YET UNDERSTOOD I WILL CAUSE TO UNDERSTAND, THOSE NOT YET IN NIRVANA I WILL CAUSE TO ATTAIN NIRVANA. OF THIS EXISTENCE AND FUTURE EXISTENCES I UNDERSTAND THE TRUE CIRCUMSTANCES. I AM ONE WHO KNOWS ALL THINGS, SEES ALL THINGS, UNDERSTANDS THE WAY, OPENS UP THE WAY, PREACHES THE WAY. YO HEAVENLY AND HUMAN BEINGS, ASURAS AND OTHERS, YOU MUST ALL COME HERE SO THAT I MAY LET YOU HEAR THE LAW!”

“AT THAT TIME LIVING BEINGS COUNTLESS THOUSANDS, TEN THOUSANDS, MILLIONS OF SPECIES COME TO THE PLACE WHERE THE BUDDHA IS, TO LISTEN TO THE LAW. THE THUS COME ONE THEN OBSERVES WHETHER THE CAPACITIES OF THESE LIVING BEINGS ARE KEEN OR DULL, WHETHER THEY ARE DILIGENT IN THEIR EFFORTS OR LAZY. AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH WHAT EACH IS CAPABLE OF HEARING, HE PREACHES THE LAW FOR THEM IN AN IMMEASURABLE VARIETY OF WAYS SO THAT ALL OF THEM ARE DELIGHTED AND ARE ABLE TO GAIN EXCELLENT BENEFITS THEREFROM.

“ONCE THESE LIVING BEINGS HAVE HEARD THE LAW, THEY WILL ENJOY PEACE AND SECURITY IN THEIR PRESENT EXISTENCE AND GOOD CIRCUMSTANCES IN FUTURE EXISTENCES, WHEN THEY WILL RECEIVE JOY AND AGAIN BE ABLE TO HEAR THE LAW. AND HAVING HEARD THE LAW, THEY WILL ESCAPE FROM OBSTACLES AND HINDRANCES, AND WITH REGARD TO THE VARIOUS DOCTRINES WILL BE ABLE TO EXERCISE THEIR POWERS TO THE FULLEST, SO THAT GRADUALLY THEY CAN ENTER INTO THE WAY. IT IS LIKE THE RAIN FALLING FROM THE GREAT CLOUD UPON ALL THE PLANTS AND TRESS, THICKETS AND GROVES, AND MEDICINAL HERBS. EACH, DEPENDING UPON ITS SPECIES AND NATURE, RECEIVES ITS FULL SHARE OF MOISTENING AND IS ENABLED TO SPROUT AND GROW.

“THE LAW PREACHED BY THE THUS COME ONE IS OF ONE FORM, ONE FLAVOR, NAMELY, THE FORM OF EMANCIPATION, THE FORM OF SEPARATION, THE FORM OF EXTINCTION, WHICH IN THE END COMES DOWN TO A WISDOM EMBRACING ALL SPECIES. WHEN THE LIVING BEINGS HEAR THE LAW OF THE THUS COME ONE, THOUGH, THEY MAY EMBRACE, READ AND RECITE IT, AND PRACTICE IT AS IT DICTATES, THEY THEMSELVES DO NOT REALIZE OR UNDERSTAND THE BLESSINGS THEY ARE GAINING THEREBY. WHY IS THIS? BECAUSE ONLY THE THUS COME ONE UNDERSTANDS THE SPECIES, THE APPEARANCES, THE ENTITIES, THE NATURES OF THESE LIVING BEINGS. HE KNOWS WHAT THEY DWELL ON, WHAT THINGS THEY PONDER, WHAT THINGS THEY PRACTICE. HE KNOWS HOW THEY DWELL ON THEM, HOW THEY PONDER, HOW THEY PRACTICE. HE KNOWS THE MEANS WHEREBY THEY DWELL ON THEM, THE MEANS WHEREBY THEY PONDER, THE MEANS WHEREBY THEY PRACTICE, AND THE MEANS WHEREBY AND WHAT THEY ATTAIN.

“LIVING BEINGS EXIST IN A VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTS, BUT ONLY THE THUS COME ONE SEES THE TRUE CIRCUMSTANCES AND FULLY UNDERSTANDS THEM WITHOUT HINDRANCE. IT IS LIKE THOSE PLANTS AND TREES, THICKETS AND GROVES, AND MEDICINAL HERBS THAT DO NOT THEMSELVES KNOW WHETHER THEY ARE SUPERIOR, MIDDLING, OR INFERIOR IN NATURE. BUT THE THUS COME ONE KNOWS THAT THIS IS THE LAW OF ONE FORM, ONE FLAVOR, NAMELY, THE FORM OF EMANCIPATION, THE FORM OF SEPARATION, THE FORM OF EXTINCTION, THE FORM OF ULTIMATE NIRVANA, OF CONSTANT TRANQUILITY AND EXTINCTION, THE FORM OF ULTIMATE NIRVANA, OF CONSTANT TRANQUILITY AND EXTINCTION, THE FORM OF ULTIMATE NIRVANA, OF CONSTANT TRANQUILITY AND EXTINCTION, WHICH IN THE END FINDS ITS DESTINATION IN EMPTINESS. THE BUDDHA UNDERSTANDS ALL THIS. BUT BECAUSE HE CAN SEE THE DESIRES THAT ARE IN THE MINDS OF LIVING BEINGS, HE GUIDES AND PROTECTS THEM, AND FOR THIS REASON DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY PREACH TO THEM THE WISDOM THAT EMBRACES ALL SPECIES.

“YOU AND THE OTHERS, KASHYAPA, HAVE DONE A VERY RARE THING, FOR YOU CAN UNDERSTAND HOW THE THUS COME ONE PREACHES THE LAW IN ACCORDANCE WITH WHAT IS APPROPRIATE, YOU CAN HAVE FAITH IN IT, YOU CAN ACCEPT IT. WHY DO I SAY THIS? BECAUSE THE FACT THAT THE BUDDHAS, THE WORLD-HONORED ONES, PREACH THE LAW IN ACCORDANCE WITH WHAT IS APPROPRIATE IS HARD TO COMPREHEND, HARD TO UNDERSTAND.”

AT THAT TIME THE WORLD-HONORED ONE, WISHING TO STATE HIS MEANING ONCE MORE, SPOKE IN VERSE FORM, SAYING:

“THE DHARMA KING, DESTROYER OF BEING, WHEN HE APPEARS IN THE WORLD ACCORDS WITH THE DESIRES OF LIVING BEINGS, PREACHING THE LAW IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. THE THUS COME ONE, WORTHY OF HONOR AND REVERENCE, IS PROFOUND AND FAR-REACHING IN WISDOM. FOR LONG HE REMAINED SILENT REGARDING THE ESSENTIAL, IN NO HURRY TO SPEAK OF IT AT ONCE. IF THOSE WHO ARE WISE HEAR OF IT THEY CAN BELIEVE AND UNDERSTAND IT, BUT THOSE WITHOUT WISDOM WILL HAVE DOUBTS AND REGRETS AND FOR ALL TIME WILL REMAIN IN ERROR. FOR THIS REASON, KASHYAPA, HE ADJUSTS TO THE PERSON’S POWER WHEN PREACHING, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF VARIOUS CAUSES AND ENABLING THE PERSON TO A GAIN A CORRECT VIEW. KASHYAPA, YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS LIKE A GREAT CLOUD THAT RISES UP IN THE WORLD AND COVERS THAT IT IS LIKE A GREAT CLOUD THAT RISES UP IN THE WORLD AND COVERS IT ALL OVER. THIS BENEFICENT CLOUD IS LADEN WITH MOISTURE, THE LIGHTNING GLEAMS AND FLASHES, AND THE SOUND OF THUNDER REVERBERATES AFAR, CAUSING THE MULTITUDE TO REJOICE. THE SUN’S RAYS ARE VEILED AND HIDDEN, A CLEAR COOLNESS COMES OVER THE LAND; MASSES OF DARKNESS DESCEND AND SPREAD– YOU CAN ALMOST TOUCH THEM. THE RAIN FALLS EVERYWHERE, COMING DOWN ON ALL FOUR SIDES. ITS FLOW AND SATURATION ARE MEASURELESS, REACHING TO EVERY AREA OF THE EARTH, TO THE RAVINES AND VALLEYS OF THE MOUNTAINS AND STREAMS, TO THE REMOTE AND SECLUDED PLACES WHERE GROW PLANTS, BUSHES, MEDICINAL HERBS, TREES LARGE AND SMALL, A HUNDRED GRAINS, RICH SEEDLINGS, SUGAR CANE, GRAPE VINES. THE RAIN MOISTENS THEM ALL, NONE FAILS TO RECEIVE ITS FULL SHARE. THE PARCHED GROUND IS EVERYWHERE WATERED, HERBS AND TREES ALIKE GROW LUSH. WHAT FALLS FROM THE VLOUD IS WATER OF A SINGLE FLAVOR, BUT THE PLANTS AND TREES, THICKETS AND GROVES, EACH ACCEPT THE MOISTURE THAT IS APPROPRIATE TO ITS PORTION. ALL THE VARIOUS TREES, WHETHER SUPERIOR, MIDDLING, OR INFERIOR, TAKE WHAT IS FITTING FOR A LARGE OR SMALL AND EACH IS ENABLED TO SPROUT AND GROW. ROOT, STEM, LIMB, LEAF, THE FLOW AND HUE OF FLOWER AND FRUIT– ONE RAIN EXTENDS TO THEM AND ALL ARE ABLE TO BECOME FRESH AND GLOSSY. WHETHER THEIR ALLOTMENTS OF ENTITY, APPEARANCE, AND NATURE ARE LARGE OR SMALL, THE MOISTENING THEY RECEIVE IS ONE, BUT EACH GROWS AND FLOURISHES IN ITS OWN WAY. THE BUDDHA IS LIKE THIS WHEN HE APPEARS IN THE WORLD, COMPARABLE TO A GREAT CLOUD THAT COVERS ALL THINGS EVERYWHERE. HAVING APPEARED IN THE WORLD, FOR THE SAKE OF LIVING BEINGS HE MAKES DISTINCTIONS IN EXPOUNDING THE TRUTH REGARDING PHENOMENA. THE GREAT SAGE, THE WORLD-HONORED ONE, TO HEAVENLY AND HUMAN BEINGS, IN THE MIDST OF ALL BEINGS, PRONOUNCES THESE WORDS: I AM THE THUS COME ONE, MOST HONORED OF TWO-LEGGED BEINGS. I APPEAR IN THE WORLD LIKE A GREAT CLOUD THAT SHOWERS MOISTURE UPON ALL THE DRY AND WITHERED LIVING BEINGS, SO THAT ALL ARE ABLE TO ESCAPE SUFFERING, GAIN THE JOY OF PEACE AND SECURITY, THE JOYS OF THIS WORLD, AND THE JOY OF NIRVANA. ALL YOU HEAVENLY AND HUMAN BEINGS OF THIS ASSEMBLY, LISTEN CAREFULLY AND WITH ONE MIND! ALL OF YOU SHOULD GATHER AROUND AND OBSERVE THE ONE OF UNEXCELLED HONOR. I AM THE WORLD-HONORED ONE, NONE CAN RIVAL ME. IN ORDER TO BRING PEACE AND SECURITY TO LIVING BEINGS I HAVE APPEARED IN THE WORLD AND FOR THE SAKE OF THIS GREAT ASSEMBLY I PREACH THE SWEET DEW OF THE PURE LAW. THIS LAW IS OF A SINGLE FLAVOR, THAT OF EMANCIPATION, NIRVANA. WITH A SINGLE WONDERFUL SOUND I EXPOUND AND UNFOLD ITS MEANING; CONSTANTLY FOR THE SAKE OF THE GREAT VEHICLE I CREATE CAUSES AND CONDITIONS. I LOOK UPON ALL THINGS AS BEING UNIVERSALLY EQUAL, I HAVE NO MIND TO FAVOR THIS OR THAT, TO LOVE ONE OR HATE ANOTHER. I AM WITHOUT GREED OR ATTACHMENT AND WITHOUT LIMITATION OR HINDRANCE. AT ALL TIMES, FOR ALL THINGS I PREACH THE LAW EQUALLY; AS I WOULD FOR A SIGNLE PERSON, THAT SAME WAY I DO FOR NUMEROUS PERSONS. CONSTANTLY I EXPOUND AND PREACH THE LAW, NEVER HAVE I DONE ANYTHING ELSE, COMING, GOING, SITTING, STANDING, NEVER TO THE END GROWING WEARY OR DISHEARTENED. I BRING FULLNESS AND SATISFACTION TO THE WORLD, LIKE A RAIN THAT SPREADS ITS MOISTURE EVERYWHERE. EMINENT AND LOWLY, SUPERIOR AND INFERIOR, OBSERVERS OF PRECEPTS, VIOLATORS OF PRECEPTS, THOSE FULLY ENDOWED WITH PROPER DEMEANOR, THOSE NOT FULLY ENDOWED, THOSE OF CORRECT VIEWS, OF ERRONEOUS VIEWS, OF KEEN CAPACITY, OF DULL CAPACITY– I CAUSE THE DHARMA RAIN TO RAIN ON ALL EQUALLY, NEVER LAX OR NEGLECTFUL. WHEN ALL THE VARIOUS LIVING BEINGS HEAR MY LAW, THEY RECEIVE IT ACCORDING TO THEIR POWER, DWELLING IN THEIR DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS. SOME INHABIT THE REALM OF HUMAN AND HEAVENLY BEINGS, OF WHEEL-TURNING SAGE KINDS, SHAKRA, BRAHMA, AND THE OTHER KINGS- THESE ARE THE INFERIOR MEDICINAL HERBS. SOME UNDERSTAND THE LAW OF NO OUTFLOWS, ARE ABLE TO ATTAIN NIRVANA, TO ACQUIRE THE SIX TRANSCENDENTAL POWERS AND GAIN IN PARTICULAR THE THREE INSIGHTS, OR LIVE ALONE IN MOUNTAIN FORESTS, CONSTANTLY PRACTICING MEDITATION AND GAINING THE ENLIGHTENMENT OF CAUSE-AWAKENED ONES– STILL OTHERS SEEK THE PLACE OF THE WORLD-HONORED ONE, CONVINCED THAT THEY CAN BECOME BUDDHAS, CONVINCED THAT THEY CAN BECOME BUDDHAS, PUTTING FORTH DILIGENT EFFORT AND PRACTICING MEDITATION– THESE ARE THE SUPERIOR MEDICINAL HERBS. AGAIN THERE ARE SONES OF THE BUDDHA WHO DEVOTE THEIR MINDS SOLELY TO THE BUDDHA WAY, CONSTANTLY PRACTICING MERCY AND COMPASSION, KNOWING THAT THEY THEMSELVES WILL ATTAIN BUDDHAHOOD, CERTAIN OF IT AND NEVER DOUBTING– THESE I CALL THE SMALL TRESS. THOSE WHO ABIDE IN PEACE IN THEIR TRANSCENDENTAL POWERS, TURNING THE WHEEL OF NON-REGRESSION, SAVING INNUMERABLE MILLIONS OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF LIVING BEINGS– BODHISATTVAS SUCH AS THESE I CALL THE LARGE TREES. THE EQUALITY OF THE BUDDHA’S PREACHING IS LIKE A RAIN OF A SINGLE FLAVOR, BUT DEPENDING UPON THE NATURE OF THE LIVING BEINGS, THE WAY IN WHICH IT IS RECEIVED IS NOT UNIFORM, JUST AS THE VARIOUS PLANTS AND TREES EACH RECEIVE THE MOISTURE IN A DIFFERENT MANNER. THE BUDDHA EMPLOYS THIS PARABLE AS AN EXPEDIENT MEANS TO OPEN UP AND REVEAL THE MATTER, USING VARIOUS KINDS OF WORDS AND PHRASES AND EXPOUNDING THE SINGLE LAW, BUT IN TERMS OF THE BUDDHA WISDOM THIS IS NO MORE THAN ONE DROP OF THE OCEAN. I RAIN DOWN THE DHARMA RAIN, FILLING THE WHOLE WORLD, AND THIS SINGLE-FLAVORED DHARMA IS PRACTICED BY EACH ACCORDING TO THE INDIVIDUAL’S POWER. IT IS LIKE THOSE THICKETS AND GROVES, MEDICINAL HERBS AND TREES THAT, ACCORDING TO WHETHER THEY ARE LARGE OR SMALL, BIT BY BIT GROW LUSH AND BEAUTIFUL. THE LAW OF THE BUDDHAS IS CONSTANTLY OF A SINGLE FLAVOR, CAUSING THE MANY WORLDS TO ATTAIN THE MANY WORLDS TO ATTAIN FULL SATISFACTION EVERYWHERE; BY PRACTICING GRADUALLY AND STAGE BY STAGE, ALL BEINGS CAN GAIN THE FRUITS OF THE WAY. THE VOICE-HEARERS AND CAUSE-AWAKENED ONES INHABIT THE MOUNTAIN FORESTS, DWELLING IN THEIR FINAL EXISTENCES, HEARING THE LAW AND GAINING ITS FRUITS– WE MAY CALL THEM MEDICINAL HERBS THAT GROW AND MATURE EACH IN ITS OWN WAY. IF THERE ARE BODHISATTVAS WHO ARE STEADFAST AND FIRM IN WISDOM, WHO FULLY COMPREHEND THE THREEFOLD WORLD AND SEEK THE SUPREME VEHICLE, THESE WE CALL THE SMALL TRESS THAT ACHIEVE GROWTH AND MATURITY. AGAIN THERE ARE THOSE WHO DWELL IN MEDITATION, WHO HAVE GAINED THE STRENGTH OF TRANSCENDENTAL POWERS, HAVE HEARD OF THE EMPTINESS OF ALL PHENOMENA, GREATLY REJOICE IN IT IN THIER MINDS, AND EMIT COUNTLESS RAYS OF LIGHT TO SAVE LIVING BEINGS– THESE WE CALL LARGE TREES THAT HAVE GAINED GROWTH AND MATURITY. IN THIS WAY, KASHYAPA, THE LAW PREACHED BY THE BUDDHA IS COMPARABLE TO A GREAT CLOUD THAT, WITH A SINGLE-FLAVORED RAIN, MOISTENS HUMAN FLOWERS SO THAT EACH IS ABLE TO BEAR FRUIT. KASHYAPA, YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT THROUGH VARIOUS CAUSES AND CONDITIONS, VARIOUS KINDS OF SIMILES AND PARABLE, I OPEN UP AND REVEAL THE BUDDHA WAY. THIS IS THE EXPEDIENT MEANS I EMPLOY AND THE SAME IS TRUE OF THE OTHER BUDDHAS’ NOW FOR YOU AND THE OTHERS I PREACH THE UTMOST TRUTH: NONE IN THE MULTITUDE OF VOICE-HEARERS HAS ENTERED THE STAGE OF EXTINCTION. WHAT YOU ARE PRACTICING IS THE BODHISATTVA WAY, AND AS YOU GRADUALLY ADVANCE IN PRACTICE AND LEARNING YOU ARE ALL CERTAIN TO ATTAIN BUDDHAHOOD.

Our Mission: A New Kind of Institute for a New Kind of World

The Toda Institute is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization committed to the pursuit of peace through dialogue. In cooperation with other peace organizations, the institute aims to maximize the efforts of people of all backgrounds and creeds. We offer opportunities to experts in peace studies to interact, research and publish in a global context, giving a voice to humankind as a whole about its most pressing issues.

Our motto, “Dialogue of Civilizations for Global Citizenship,” encapsulates the vision of Josei Toda (1900-1958), a Japanese educator and philosopher who was imprisoned together with his mentor Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944) for upholding the belief in the dignity of life despite persecution by the Japanese military government during World War II. Makiguchi died in prison but Toda was able to survive the ordeal, devoting the rest of his life to the development of a grassroots peace movement in post-war Japan.

The Toda Institute was established on 11 February 1996 by Toda’s main disciple Daisaku Ikeda (1928 -), the President of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a worldwide movement for peace, culture and education based on Buddhist Humanism. Ikeda is a prolific writer, poet and photographer who has published more than 50 volumes of dialogues with prominent world figures. He established the Toda Institute to implement Toda’s vision of a world free of nuclear weapons where global citizens interact with each other based on trust and friendship. Ikeda expanded this vision in order to create a new civilizational platform characterized by respect for life, interconnectedness, understanding and cooperation.

Goals and Activities of the Toda Institute

Our main activities, for the promotion of peace research, are the organization of conferences, the publication of books, and of the yearly journal Peace & Policy. Following Toda, Ikeda asserts that all institutions should first and foremost serve people. Like his mentor, he also believes in dialogue and nonviolence as the proper tools to achieve goals. Inspired by their common vision, the Toda Institute will focus on three main themes:

  • Human Security and Human Rights
  • Dialogue and Nonviolent Conflict Transformation
  • Global Governance and World Citizenship

These three themes will be explored in order to find concrete solutions to three main issues:

  • Abolition of Nuclear Weapons
  • UN Reform, to ensure a more collaborative world
  • Sustainable Peace through Environmental Integrity and Social Justice

On 8 September 1957, Josei Toda made a declaration against nuclear weapons for an audience of 50,000 people in Yokohama, Japan and made a rousing appeal to the youth. He declared that the willingness to use these weapons was an expression of the devilish nature lurking within human beings, leading them to control and dominate others through fear and threats rather than choosing dialogue and collaboration. Based on Toda’s declaration, Ikeda has outlined his vision for a peaceful global civilization in numerous proposals, and inspired by these, the Toda Institute will focus on the three main global security issues mentioned above.

The role of each individual in the building of this future global civilization can take the form of a narrative. The starting point of any endeavor for peace is the personal transformation of an individual human being. Our institute wants to place world peace firmly into the hands of real people, and this is actualized as a focus on Human Security and Human Rights. Next, people with an elevated consciousness need to have meaningful dialogues about the future of the world, and about how to solve the numerous problems affecting humanity. This translates into Dialogue and Nonviolent Conflict Transformation. Finally, through dialogue, people with a heightened awareness can design the best systems to tackle humanity’s challenges, and this can be achieved through Global Governance and World Citizenship. The most important global issue for Toda was the abolition of nuclear weapons, and Ikeda has added support for the UN, inspired by Makiguchi’s concept of Humanitarian Competition. Finally, if Toda were alive today, he would certainly be very concerned about the environment, as much as he was about nuclear weapons in 1957. Ikeda made proposals that helped establish the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development which started in 2005. This narrative is at the origin of the three themes and three issues which form the framework of the Toda Institute’s activities.
